Sha Shuseiは、身体やその表面、そして「見る／見られる」という関係を通して、他者の視線のなかで、自分自身への理解やイメージがどのように変わっていくのかを探っています。

ピンクのカーテン、金属の質感をもつ身体、宙に浮かぶ断片、鏡。それらが組み合わさり、舞台や寝室、祭壇を思わせる空間が生まれます。身体は完全な姿ではなく、殻や断片、鏡に映る像、姿勢として現れます。柔らかな布と冷たい金属が重なり合い、親密さと距離、弱さと強さ、美しさと不安が同じ空間に存在します。

布は、皮膚や衣服のように身体を包み、守る一方で、覆い隠したり、動きを制限したりするものでもあります。鏡に映る身体は、見る人の位置や動きによって姿を変え、作品と鑑賞者の関係も変化させます。金属の冷たさや硬さは、身体の柔らかさや傷つきやすさと対照をなしています。

一部の作品は森の中に置かれ、人工的につくられた身体と自然の風景とのあいだに、違和感や緊張が生まれます。展示され、人に見られるためのものが、そこでは誰かが残していった儀式の跡のようにも見えてきます。

「Soft Shell（柔らかな殻）」は、身体を包む外側の層と、自分を守るためにつくるイメージや境界を表しています。包まれ、分解され、配置し直された身体を通して、外に見せる姿と内なる自己とのあいだにある、変わり続ける距離を問いかけます。

アーティストについて

Sha Shuseiは、中国出身、東京を拠点に活動するアーティストです。日本大学芸術学部で絵画を学び、卒業しました。絵画を中心に制作を続け、近年はインスタレーションや写真、空間を使った表現にも活動の幅を広げています。

制作では、目に見える世界を描くだけでなく、感情や心の動きを表すことを大切にしています。女性は、長年にわたる重要なテーマのひとつです。女性の身体や姿勢、イメージを通して、言葉では伝えきれない複雑な感情を表現しています。

絵画では、顔や身体の細部をあえて描かず、曖昧さや未完成の部分を残しています。それは、記憶や経験、周囲の環境、他者の視線によって変わり続ける感情に近づくための方法です。色やかたち、質感は、直感や記憶、想像から生まれます。同時に、現実の人物や身体、経験も、姿を変え、新たに組み合わされて作品に現れます。

近年は、身体を平面に描くことから、身体が空間のなかでどのように存在するかへと関心を広げています。布や鏡、金属などを使いながら、女性の身体がどのように見られ、飾られ、かたちづくられ、意味づけられるのかを探っています。また、他者の視線や期待のなかで、人が自分自身をどう捉え直すのかにも目を向けています。

Sha Shuseiは、「女性」をひとつの決まったイメージで捉えず、変化を重ねながら形づくられていく存在として考えています。作品では、簡単には説明できない部分を残しながら、深い感情や自分自身への理解を探っています。制作は、自分を知るとともに、抑えてきた感情や言葉にできなかった思いを解き放つ方法を見つけるプロセスでもあります。

About the Work

Through the body, its surface, and the relationship between seeing and being seen, Sha Shusei explores how the ways others see us can shape our self-image and our understanding of ourselves.

Pink curtains, metallic body forms, suspended fragments, and mirrors come together in a space that recalls a stage, a bedroom, or an altar. The body appears not as a complete figure, but as shells, fragments, reflections, and poses. Soft fabric and cold metal bring closeness and distance, fragility and strength, beauty and unease into the same space.

Like skin or clothing, fabric wraps and protects the body, but it can also hide it or limit its movement. Reflections change as viewers move, shifting both the image of the body and the relationship between the viewer and the work. The coldness and hardness of metal contrast with the body’s softness and how easily it can be hurt.

Some works are placed in a forest, where the contrast between human-made bodies and the natural setting creates a sense of tension. Objects made to be displayed and seen begin to look like traces of a ritual someone has left behind.

“Soft Shell” refers to both the body’s outer layer and the images and boundaries we create to protect ourselves. Through bodies that are wrapped, taken apart, and rearranged, these works explore the changing distance between how we appear on the outside and who we are within.

About the Artist

Sha Shusei is a Chinese artist based in Tokyo. She graduated from Nihon University College of Art, where she studied painting. Painting remains central to her practice, which has expanded in recent years to include installation, photography, and work with space.

Her work goes beyond depicting the visible world to express feelings and inner experiences. Women have long been one of her main subjects. Through the female body, poses, and images, she explores complex emotions that cannot be fully expressed in words.

In her paintings, details of the face and body are often left out on purpose, leaving figures unclear or unfinished. This is a way of approaching feelings that keep changing through memory, experience, surroundings, and the ways others see us. Colours, forms, and textures grow out of intuition, memory, and imagination. People, bodies, and experiences from the real world also return in altered forms and new combinations.

In recent years, her focus has grown from painting the body on a flat surface to exploring how it exists in space. Using fabric, mirrors, metal, and other materials, she examines how women’s bodies are seen, decorated, shaped, and defined. She also considers how people come to understand themselves differently in response to the views and expectations of others.

Sha Shusei sees female identity as something that continues to change and take shape, rather than as a fixed image. By leaving parts of her work open and unexplained, she explores deeper feelings and ways of understanding the self. For her, making art is also a process of self-discovery and a way to find expression for feelings that have been held back or are difficult to put into words.
