The Leopard of Kilimanjaro
Near the summit of Kilimanjaro lies the frozen carcass of a leopard. No one knows what it was seeking at that altitude. This unanswered question, introduced in the opening of Ernest Hemingway’s The Snows of Kilimanjaro, provides a point of departure for Yu Jin’s work.
“I’m looking for this leopard, and I want you to find it too.”
The Leopard of Kilimanjaro is an attempt to recover incomplete memories and indistinct pasts through painting, allowing them to grow anew. Rather than reconstructing the past as a finished image, the act of painting opens it to new possibilities. Conceived as a theoretically limitless work, it has no predetermined endpoint.
The invitation to seek the leopard extends to the viewer. As encounters with the paintings bring personal memories and experiences into play, the artist’s ongoing search becomes an invitation to begin one’s own.
